My Wellness Story

A huge component of wellness, to me, is empowerment. Now, we don’t have control over what happens to us, obviously, or the cards we are dealt regarding our health, but we do have the power to make choices. Knowing that I hold the power to make decisions that help me feel good has been a huge part of my wellness journey.

There are three main parts of my wellness journey so far - The Catalyst, The Deepening, and the Expansion.

Healing - The Catalyst

All through my teens and twenties, I suffered from severe, debilitating headaches. I tried all kinds of pain meds that barely touched the pain, and eventually I went to a neurologist.

She confirmed that there wasn’t anything medically wrong with me and put me on yet again, more medication. This time it was a daily medication that was supposed to prevent the headaches.

And it worked. But it also destroyed my stomach, and I lost a lot of weight. I didn’t feel good, so I quit the medicine. And then the headaches came back in full force.

I felt defeated and discouraged.

One day, I mentioned it to my doctor, and she said, “Oh you should see this guy who has an office here, Dr. John. He practices Traditional Chinese Medicine, and headaches are a piece of cake for him to treat.”

My jaw dropped. What? A piece of cake? Sign me up.

I was desperate at this point and willing to try anything.

So, I called Dr. John.

He shared with me his own story of healing and began to treat me as a whole person.

His methods of treating me were unlike anything I had previously experienced. He would check my pulse, look at my tongue, and a series of other techniques. Then, he would pick an herb that he thought would be right for me and ask the herb if it was what I needed.

However unconventional the approach seemed, the results were undeniable.

After a few months, my headaches went away. Not only that, I slept better, I had more energy, my whole being felt more vibrant and balanced.

And I’m incredibly thankful for that experience, not only because of how great I felt, but also because of how it opened me to different ways of approaching wellness, health, and healing.

It was the catalyst that launched me forward to continue discovering how to Live with wellness at the center of my life.

Yoga Teacher Training - The deepening

Do you remember your first time? No! The first time you ever did yoga, silly! I sure do.

It was a Sunday morning while I was studying abroad on a group program in Strasbourg, France. While most of my classmates had gone to visit large Catholic cathedrals, my friend Claire and I stayed back in the apartment, where she introduced me to a Hatha practice.

Although we almost missed our scheduled boat ride (we had to run, and the boat had to pull over to pick us up), that morning of yoga changed my life.

When I got back home, I co-founded the Yoga Club at my college and practiced yoga on the big grassy lawn in the middle of campus every day. I taught classes at a local fitness center.

Yoga quickly became a part of my life. And in some way, in differing levels, it has always been since that first time.

It wasn't until almost 10 years later that I would take the plunge to pursue a Yoga Teacher Training course. I was never quite sure if the time was right, but finally it was when my husband and I moved from Flagstaff to Phoenix, AZ. I moved there without a job, and although I did find a job a couple of months later, it ended up being the exact right thing at that time in my life.

I embarked on a 200-hour course with Inner Vision Yoga in Tempe, AZ.

The Yoga Teacher Training was challenging and heart-opening in both the physical and spiritual sense.

The Yoga Teacher Training was the second influential piece of my wellness journey, and it is something I carry with me.

It was the deepening of my pursuit of wellness.

Natural living - The expansion

When I was pregnant with my second baby, I was feeling all the pregnancy things. I couldn't sleep too well, my everything hurt, I was generally crabby and impatient. And very uneasy over the whole experience.

Plus I had child number one, who is a spirited child, to say the least. But, I needed something gentle, being pregnant and all.

I had followed my now dear friend Lindsay over at the White Buffalo Styling Co. for some time, and I noticed she was starting to share more and more about essential oils, and how they were great for so many things, including all the pregnancy things.

I had used lavender and a couple of other sporadically back in the day, but that was about it. So, I joined in on an Instagram class and figured, "What the hey. I'll give it a chance. " My starter kit was my Christmas present to myself.

And what a gift it was.

The gift of empowerment - to be able to listen to and honor my wellness needs and the needs of my family.

The gift of community - getting to know Lindsay and the amazing community she has created through the Blooming Village  has enriched my life beyond measure.

The gift of natural living -  essential oils have opened me up to the whole world of natural living. That is why I call my interaction with them the expansion.

Get started with essential oils

I’ve learned so much more about how to take care of myself and my family in a natural, gentle way through the support of community, resources, and simple trial and error.

Essential oils work for me. I use them every day, to help get a good night’s sleep, to support relaxation, to help with stomach discomfort, to clean, to wash my face, to set the mood in my house. All of it. And they are perfect little travel companions for all of the above as well.

But, pursuing wellness is a journey. Like a river, it flows and changes as I change.

But, I also know I'm not alone in this journey, and I can't wait to support you on your wellness journey as well. Through wellness travel, yoga, essential oils, community, I'm here for you!
